How to build a Sustainable Wardrobe

It’s no secret that times are changing and after the year we’ve had in 2020, it’s time to do some self-reflection. In our personal lives, our career paths and even our wardrobes. More and more of us are staying home and have found great use for items we didn’t pay much attention to before. Obviously, sustainability is using and repurposing what you already have but with that there is also a need to get rid of and/or introduce new things. When it comes to building a sustainable wardrobe, you have to start reflecting on those items that were simply impulse buys and begin identifying what’s truly essential. Below are some questions you may want to consider when reflecting on your wardrobe:

What material is this item made of?

What are the values of the company I purchased from?

Do they value sustainability?

Will I wear this again?

Does this represent me?

Can I wear this more than one way?

Now this doesn’t cover the entirety of sustainability but it will keep you moving in the right direction. After reflecting on the above, consider which items will contribute to the sustainability of your wardrobe. For example:

  • Tanks – great for layering, super casual, versatile
  • Maxi skirts – not seasonal, casual + professional
  • White button ups – not seasonal, can also be layered for colder months, professional, casual + so timeless!

Again, these are just a few examples of items that will bring you closer to a sustainable wardrobe. 100% sustainability won’t happen overnight but quarantine has gifted us the time to continue in that direction. By this time next year, you’ll have a more intentional closet that you love and that loves you back!
